Hair Removal Product Reviews : Laser Hair
Removal
Laser hair removal is considered by most as
the most efficient and effective method of permanent hair
removal. This treatment method involves using laser pulses with a specific
level of light energy that can be absorbed only by the melanin
(skin pigment) surrounding the
hair bulb. The
resulting spike in temperature weakens the hair bulb and
effectively destroys the growth cells. Laser hair removal
is ideal for anyone who wants to get rid of unwanted
hair permanently and are prepared to pay for it. It's
important to note that laser does not work on light hair
and very fine and vellus hair. Electrolysis is the only
solution for these type of hair.
Pros: Large areas, such as legs,
can be treated relatively quickly. Advances in technology mean
all skin tones, areas and hair colours
and types can be
treated. You don't have to have a regrowth to be treated, so
you can shave between treatment. It's relatively painless and
the final results is
permanent. Under the hands of an expert, there's very low risk
of scarring or skin burns.
Cons: Cost and time. Cost per
session can run from tens of dollars to hundreds of dollars
depending on the area of the body to be
treated. Usually, an
average of 6-9 sessions will be necessary, meaning total costs
can run into a couple of thousand bucks. You usually have
to leave about eight
weeks between each session, so it may take up to a year or so
to experience permanent hair removal.

Reviews : Electrolysis
Electrolysis is a hair removal system in
which a fine needle is inserted into each individual hair
follicle, then a low-level electric current is
run down the needle
to `kill' the hair follicle. The hair has to be at the right
stage of growth for this to work, which means the therapist
may have to go over
the same area a few times before permenant hair removal takes
place. Its ideal for small areas such as the chin or bikini
line.
Pros: Hair removal is permanent.
Although the process is more lengthy than laser removal -
because the therapist works follicle by follicle
- you can have a
treatment once or twice a week.
Cons: Depending on the area to be
treated, it can be time-consuming (because the therapist works
follicle by follicle) and expensive.
Not suitable for
people who dreads needles. In general, you need to have more
treatment than when using the laser method. You need to
make sure that the
therapist is very experienced because treatment can be a bit
painful, and pitting or tiny scars can appear if the needle is
poorly handled.

Review : Waxing and
Sugaring
Warm waxing, hot waxing and sugaring work the
same way: firstly a sticky substance is applied to the skin,
and then pulled off rapidly to pluck hairs out of its roots. With warm
waxing, a thin layer of wax is applied and then removed with
cotton strips. With hot wax, a
thicker layer
of hot wax is used, which peels off in a strip by itself.
Sugaring uses a sticky syrup which is a mixture of lemon
juice, sugar and water that is heated and subsequently turns
into a ball-like shape. It is rolled over the skin in a
ball or applied like warm wax and removed
with cotton
strips. The result lasts approximately five to six weeks.
Warm wax and sugaring are best for larger areas like
legs. Hot wax is best on coarser hair and
for small, tricky areas like eyebrows.
Pros: Waxing and sugaring give a
temporary result - four to six weeks. Regrown hair is fine and
diminishes with each treatment. Waxing
is also fairly cheap.
If you want to do it yourself, there are many DIY kits sold in
the market.
Cons: You need to wait till the
hairs grow to approximately 1/2 cm before it can be waxed away
again. This treatment method can
painful, particularly
the first few times. Doing it yourself at home can be quite
messy.

Reviews : THREADING
This is a highly skilled method of removing
hair. It is considered an ancient technique of hair removal and
is popular in Arabic countries. This method is one where each hair is
manually and individually removed by a tightened thread. It is
mainly used for the eyebrows and facial hair.
Pros: It is an inexpensive way to
remove unwanted hair and results last about a week. It also
boast the added benefit of causing the
causing the regrown
hair to become thinner over time.
Cons: Threading can lead to pain,
scarring and ingrown hair.

Review : Depilatory cream
Depilatory creams contain alkaline chemicals
which dissolve hair protein, thus causing it to break in half.
Depilatory products come in gel, cream and roll-on forms. It is not suitable
for women with lots of body hair, especially coarse body hair.
It should also not be used on eyebrows, pubic area or broken or sensitive
skin.
Pros: It is a cheap option when
compared to other hair removal methods.
Cons: Can be messy and might
cause ingrown hair or leave sensitive skins dry, itchy or
stinging. Results only last a few days.

Reviews : Epilating
devices
Epilating devices yank out the hairs at the
root, hence giving long-lasting results. These electrical
devices function by gripping and
pulling out several
hairs at a time with the tweezing action of a rotating head
which can be battery operated or connected to the mains.
However, it is
painful, though this lessens over time, and coarse hair is
prone to break rather than coming out
cleanly. You will get
the same amount of hair free days as with waxing and also,
every time you use it, you get more
hair free days than
the previous time. To
alleviate the pain level, some people take a pain killer 15
mins before using a epilator and they also use talc powder (baby powder)
on the area. This helps the epilator grip the hair better, they
claim. Epilators can be used to remove hair from the legs, arms, underarms
and bikini line. Newer ones have specialised adaptors to suit
hair removal from different
body
parts.
Pros: Involves only a one-time
investment of a few hundred bucks which can last a few years!
Epilating is a fast process, particularly if
you do it regularly
without letting the hair grow too much. Result is silky,
smooth, hairless skin lasting for 3-4 weeks. Also, the regrowth
is said to be finer,
softer and sparser with time as hair is pulled straight from
the roots. An epilator can be used to remove very short and
fine hair, even less
than a millimetre in length.
Cons: Some people may
experience a little skin redness after epilating; however, it
subsides in a few hours. Can be painful. May
cause ingrown
hairs.

Review : Shaving
Shaving involves using a razor and normally,
a moisturizing shaving cream/foam. It is a cheap, quick and
most common way for hair removal. However, women should never use a
razor on their face.
Pros: Task can be completed
quickly, and is painless, cheap and fast.
Cons: May result in thicker
re-grow hair. Hair removal is not permanent, meaning
maintenance is required every one to two days. If
not careful, shaving
may cause stubble, cuts, ingrown hair or skin
irritation.
